Founded in the third century BC. By the Carthaginians, the capital of Tingitana Mauritania, was an important military outpost of the Roman Empire. The archaeological site, located in a fertile agricultural region, retains important vestiges of many of them. The city would later be the ephemeral capital of Idris I, founder of the dynasty of the Idrisids, who is buried in the nearby place of Mulay Idriss.
